Rangers now emerge as shock candidates to sign player Alan Shearer called 'Awesome' - report

Rangers have emerged as shock contenders to secure the services of Liverpool defender Andy Robertson this summer.

The Scotland international has confirmed that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season after spending nine years at Anfield.

The 32-year-old’s contract at the Merseyside outfit expires at the end of the season, which means that he is set to be a free agent.

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker are admirers of Andy Robertson

Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have closely watched Robertson for the last nine years in the Premier League and are big fans of the left-back.

“Awesome, what a signing, what a signing. Do you remember he was rated by Wrighty? Ian Wright,” Shearer said in 2021.

Lineker responded: “We were sat in the studio, watching a Hull game and Wrighty said I really like this left-back, this Robertson kid is fantastic.

“He had a shocker in this game, and we ripped into Wrighty saying what do you know about full-backs?

The Ibrox outfit, too, are understood to be admirers, and according to Sportmediaset, have emerged as surprising contenders to sign him.

The Italian media outlet has claimed that Tottenham are currently the frontrunners to sign the left-back, while AC Milan are keeping tabs on him as well.

It has also been stated that both Rangers and Celtic are fans of Robertson and want to bring him to Glasgow in the summer.

The Gers have two left-backs in Tuur Rommens and Jayden Meghoma, but the former is on loan and is expected to return to Brentford in the summer.

Why Rangers must move heaven and earth to sign Robertson

While Rommens has performed exceptionally since his January move to Ibrox, it is important for the Gers to have two specialists in each position if they are to compete on multiple fronts.

Rangers have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League at the league phase format directly, and for that, they will need a deep squad.

By signing Robertson, they will have someone who will bring leadership into the dressing room, something that will be needed if James Tavernier leaves.

He has won multiple trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, and that mentality will rub off on the other players.

Robertson can still put in a shift and play regularly in Scotland as the top flight is not as physically draining as the Premier League.

Rommens will also learn a lot from him as the duo are very similar in the way they play and Danny Rohl can surely get the best out of the Liverpool ace.
