Manchester United have been urged to beat bitters rivals City to the signing of England sensation Elliot Anderson.

Anderson will be in high demand this summer, with a host of clubs interesting in signing the Nottingham Forest midfielder. City are believed to be in pole position to land Anderson in a £65m deal, with Anderson understood to be leaning towards the Etihad as his first choice destination.

But United legend Bryan Robson has told his former club to make Anderson their first choice signing - and hijack his move to the Etihad. Robson believes Anderson would be the ideal replacement for Casemiro, who is leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season.

"I'm disappointed that Manchester United are going to lose Casemiro, because I think he is a really good player," Robson told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast. "He has turned his career around at United. He has been good defensively and going forward, and he’s really good in the air.

"He reads games well and he's a great passer. His ability to turn the ball round the corner into the forwards is top drawer.

"(To replace Casemiro), I’d like Elliott Anderson to sign for Manchester United. He’d be my first choice signing. They're not going to get Declan Rice from Arsenal, and that makes Anderson my first choice.

"If they can’t get him, Sandro Tonali is the player everybody is talking about, but I can understand why Newcastle wouldn’t allow him to leave.

"There has to be somebody out there who can be a really good player to replace Casemiro. The United scouts have to do their job and replace him, but they haven’t been good at that over the past few years."

Robson, meanwhile, believes United should give the manager's job to Michael Carrick full time this summer, if he secures Champions League qualification.

He added: "If Michael Carrick gets Manchester United into the Champions League, they should give him the job permanently. He deserves it when you look at where they were when he took over.

"Some people are getting carried away and saying he should only get the job if they finish third, but for me I think he should get the job if they qualify for the Champions League.

"The media will always throw other names in the hat, but I think Michael deserves it. "When he was interim manager the last time, he played three tough games against Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal, and he didn't lose a game.

"This time he’s changed the balance of the team and based on the results so far, he deserves the job.
