When David Hopkinson suggested Newcastle may have to sell a key player this summer, it started open season on transfer rumours surrounding some of their star players.
Sandro Tonali has been linked with both Manchester clubs and Arsenal, Tino Livramento has caught the gaze of Man City and the Gunners, Lewis Hall is drawing admiring glances from the capital and there's not a club on the planet who wouldn't want Bruno Guimaraes in their squad.
And Monday evening saw Anthony Gordon's name brought back into the spotlight. Liverpool and Arsenal have been tentatively linked with the former Everton winger but Bayern Munich being interested in a move for the 25-year-old came entirely out of left field.
A report from Sky Sports in Germany has suggested the German champions have identified the England international as their top winger target this summer as Vincent Kompany looks for competition on the left-hand side for former Liverpool star Luis Diaz.

Whether or not Bayern would stump up the money Newcastle would demand for Gordon, who they do not want to lose and still has four years remaining on his deal at St James' Park, remains to be seen but the fact arguably the best team in Europe right now wants to sign Gordon should speak volumes to the Magpies' decision makers.
Gordon has his dissenters on Tyneside but the indisputable fact remains that he is by far and away Newcastle's best winger. His pace and purpose on the ball isn't matched by Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga or Jacob Murphy and he would arguably be the most difficult player for United to replace.
The England international has 17 goals and five assists to his name in all competitions this season - with 10 of those coming in the Champions League - and those numbers have caught the eye of Vincent Kompany.
It would be folly not to mention that 10 of those goals have come from the penalty spot but he also has a perfect record from 18 yards this term.
His best season for the club came during the 2023/24 season where he registered 11 goals and 15 assists, joining an exclusive club of players to register double figures in both metrics in a single campaign, and although his numbers have dropped off slightly since then, he is still among Newcastle's best performers.
Certainly, a move away now is far more palatable than when the Magpies offered him to Liverpool off the back of that season in the club's desperation to avoid sanctions for breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
Gordon has also proved himself this season in an unfamiliar role as a central forward and Eddie Howe has always maintained his impact on Newcastle isn't as binary as goal contributions. Perhaps, like his manager, the Magpies may not realise what they have until he is gone.

The fact Gordon is locked in as England's first choice left-winger for this summer's World Cup ahead of Barcelona star Marcus Rashford shows what Thomas Tuchel thinks of him.
There are, of course, fans who feel Gordon is frustrating as the consistency isn't always there. They see his talent but question his desire to do the intangibles and get his hands dirty off the ball. Those in that camp would happily cash in and would also be happy for Newcastle to sell to Bayern rather than a direct Premier League rival.
But there should be no doubt that if he went to Bayern Munich, with their dominance over the Bundesliga, his game, and more than likely his numbers, would elevate to a new level.
Social media will be awash of 'what might have been' posts should that be the case, and in a summer where Newcastle have already identified the need for a new goalkeeper, right-back, left-back, midfielder and forward, adding a winger to the list to replace the best one already at the club feels like an unnecessary problem for Newcastle to avoid - particularly when top class wingers are so hard to find.
Many would argue they need a new winger regardless to upgrade on Elanga or Murphy. Having to replace Gordon as well would not be leaving Newcastle in a position of strength in the transfer market.
Gordon's long term future may well see him elsewhere and he has ambitions about going right to the top of the game. Bayern would take him there and Newcastle, if the CEO David Hopkinson and chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan are to be believed, aspire to get there.
If Gordon leaves then it should add further questions to just how fanciful those claims are. But even from a purely logistical standpoint, they should not even consider a departure this summer.
