Andoni Iraola to depart Cherries at end of season

There has been speculation around Iraola’s contract and whether he will sign an extension to stay with the Dorset club into next season, but he has made the decision to depart.

The club held negotiations with the head coach over the past 15 months to convince him to stay, the Daily Echo understands, but ultimately Iraola made the decision that he would move on.

It is understood that the Bournemouth hierarchy respect his decision and continue to think highly of the 43-year-old, having enjoyed their time with the Basque boss at the helm.

They also feel they have done everything they can to persuade Iraola to stay, including investing in the squad in January with the additions of Alex Toth and Rayan in particular.

He has led the club to back-to-back record points hauls in the Premier League, and has given them European hopes, with the team in a good position to mount a charge for qualification this season.

Iraola has been linked with a number of jobs that will be available this summer, not least the job of head coach at his former side Athletic Club, with Ernesto Valverde departing the San Mames at the end of the season.

He will first hope to lead Bournemouth to Europe, with the Cherries sat three places off sixth and two places off seventh and eighth with six games to go, with those spots all likely to bring European competition.

Iraola joined AFC Bournemouth in June 2023 as he replaced Gary O’Neil at the helm at Dean Court.
