Liverpool go head-to-head with Man Utd for signing of "fantastic" ace; Reds love his versatility

Liverpool and Manchester United are thought to be among the clubs interested in signing Sporting CP midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

The Reds’ midfield has been a major issue this season, with Jamie Carragher describing Alexis Mac Allister as a big problem there recently, saying:

“The longer the games go on the more Mac Allister struggles, I think that’s a real problem for Liverpool that they need to address in midfield.

“Curtis Jones comes on and the game goes end to end, he takes on the Wirtz role and I don’t know why, he’s not that player. There’s too much space when the game opens up and Mac Allister can’t cover it.”

Various midfielders have been linked with moves to Liverpool of late, and now, according to Caught Offside, Hjulmand is being eyed up by them ahead of the summer transfer window.

It is claimed that the Reds are “thought to admire his versatility and endurance, particularly as they continue refining their midfield following several recent changes.”

Liverpool are far from the only club interested in signing Hjulmand, however, with United seeing him as a possible successor to Casemiro at the heart of their midfield, and Tottenham are also mentioned, as they battle to stay in the Premier League.

Could Morten Hjulmand help transform Liverpool’s midfield?

Hjulmand has been a hugely impressive performer for Sporting for some time now, being hailed as “fantastic” by his former manager Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year-old is a two-time Primeira Liga champion, and this season he has averaged 2.1 tackles per game in the competition, as well as scoring twice and assisting four times for good measure.

Hjulmand covers ground impressively, proving to be a big asset out of possession, and that is arguably something Liverpool need more than anything in midfield.

An out-and-out No.6 would be ideal, with Ryan Gravenberch a player who needs more freedom and isn’t a complete natural in the role, while Mac Allister’s lack of legs has been a major issue all season long.

Whether Hjulmand ends up being identified as Liverpool’s best option remains to be seen, but he ticks plenty of boxes, from experience to defensive quality.
