Claret & Hugh West Ham Transfer Exclusive
West Ham have set the record straight after a fortnight of speculation linking Mateus Fernandes with a move away this summer.
Claret & Hugh spoke to a top club source this afternoon to get clarity on the 21-year-old’s future, following reports of interest from both Manchester United and Chelsea.
Clause claims shut down
Valuations of Fernandes have ranged from £40m to £55m, depending on the outlet, with some even suggesting there is a relegation release clause allowing him to leave on the cheap.
However, when asked directly, a senior source at the London Stadium dismissed the claims outright, saying:
“He does not.”

Second source backs up stance
A separate transfer source with strong links to the club also rejected the rumours, adding: “Fernandes doesn’t have a clause, that’s nonsense.”
It’s also worth noting that the player enjoys an excellent working relationship with Hammers manager and compatriot Nuno Espirto Santo and both share the same agent.
What is clear is that West Ham will not allow Fernandes to leave on the cheap, and there is a strong desire for him to remain at the club
