Journalist claims manager Wayne Rooney called "fantastic" has one eye on the Crystal Palace job

There has been little talk regarding the new manager at Crystal Palace.

Steve Parish and most of the fanbase at Selhurst Park are currently focused on the UEFA Conference League after the Eagles put a foot in the last four with a 3-0 win over Fiorentina.

However, as exciting as this European campaign is, a replacement for Oliver Glasner still needs to be lined up with ample time to give us the best chance of success next season.

Gareth Southgate and Frank Lampard have been tentatively linked, but Alan Nixon now claims on Patreon that Andoni Iraola is leaving the door open to Crystal Palace.

The Spaniard is an ambitious target for Parish.

Iraola currently has Bournemouth undefeated in 11 games and sitting 11th in the Premier League – just three points away from sixth – and also has admirers at Manchester United amid uncertainty over Michael Carrick.

However, the ambition could well pay off, as Nixon now states that the 43-year-old is leaving the door open to Crystal Palace.

News broke on Tuesday afternoon that Iraola – who admires Yeremy Pino – would be leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season when his contract expires. He is said to have informed his players about the decision after training.

With Athletic Bilbao also interested in the man born in Usurbil – who Wayne Rooney called “fantastic” after finishing ninth last season – a return to Spain could materialise for the Bournemouth boss.

However, winning the UEFA Conference League and achieving qualification for the UEFA Europa League as a result would presumably make Crystal Palace even more intriguing to Iraola.

The Guardian believe the Spaniard is keeping his options open amid interest in several Premier League clubs, so he sounds prepared to wait and see if Glasner does guide the Eagles to the UEFA Europa League.
