With Andy Robertson’s Liverpool exit now officially confirmed, the noise surrounding a dream move to Celtic simply won’t go away.
Robertson’s departure alongside Mohamed Salah is like the end of an era at Anfield, but Danny Murphy believes the Scotland captain still has plenty to offer at that elite level.
While there is an immense, unique pressure that comes with representing a club like Celtic, the week-to-week standard the Scottish champions face is a world away from the relentless demands at Liverpool.
Speaking on the decision to let Robertson leave, Murphy argued that the all-action left-back has been unfairly sidelined by Arne Slot this season:
“I actually think he is being underused,” stated Murphy. “Kerkez hasn’t deserved to play the bigger games ahead of him. I would have given him a contract.”

Another transfer mistake by the Hoops?

Danny Murphy thinks Celtic-linked Andy Robertson is still good enough for Liverpool
Celtic have Kieran Tierney getting stronger and stronger. Given that he is in the building, many feel it means that Robertson isn’t needed.
Then, when you add in the fact that Robertson is leaving Liverpool, it feels like his levels are dropping, but not from Murphy’s standpoint.
MORE CELTIC STORIES
Murphy watches Liverpool week in and week out. If he feels Robertson is still of that standard, then why should Celtic not push the boat out for his signature?
Nonetheless, speaking on talkSPORT, Jim White tried to question why the departing Liverpool man is getting a ‘send-off’, alongside Mohamed Salah.
But Murphy shut down that talk from White and explained how highly regarded Robertson is at Liverpool, and how much of his upbringing has played a part in his success.
Jim White: “It struck me as odd, Danny, on the back of Salah announcing that’s it. Goodbye at the end of the season, when Andy would announce his departure as well. Why now?”
Murphy: “It doesn’t bother me.”
White: “Why not wait until the last ball is kicked at the end of the season?”
Murphy: “Because he deserves a send-off. If he has to bring it up to get one. So be it, he can share the last day with Salah. Then come out and get the send-off together. He deserves it. If he doesn’t say anything and is too humble, he won’t get what he deserves.
“He is probably asked the question constantly, and he is sick of being asked the question, so he has come out and said his bit.
“The reality is that he is somebody who epitomises the success Liverpool has had. He has quality, we know that, a super player. But that determination and tenacity.
“Someone who is appreciative of the position he is in because of where he has come from. The teams he has played for, the lower leagues, and he has fought his way up to have the privilege to play for Liverpool.
“I actually think he is being underused. Kerkez hasn’t deserved to play the bigger games ahead of him. I would have given him a contract. I would have been using Kerkez as his under study, not the other way around.”
