Leeds United came away from Old Trafford with a stunning 2-1 win against Manchester United, moving six clear of the relegation zone.
Very few had high hopes for Leeds in the Premier League on Monday night as a trip to Manchester United loomed at Old Trafford.
However, a blistering first hour by Daniel Farke’s men meant we came back over the Pennines with all three points.
Leeds United shock Manchester United with 2-1 win to drastically raise survival hopes
Noah Okafor handed Farke a huge boost by being passed fit to feature against Man Utd, shaking off an injury concern to start out wide.
His presence was felt immediately as he opened the scoring with a fine finish in the fifth minute. A brief instance of head tennis just before the half-hour mark then teed up Okafor’s second, as his deflected volley nestled in the bottom corner.
Man Utd fought back with a goal from Casemiro after being reduced to 10 men for Lisandro Martinez’s hair pull on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
It was a nervy end to the game despite Leeds’ man advantage. But, Farke’s men saw out the home side’s efforts for an equaliser. That 2-1 win leaves us six clear, with six games to play. Four of those games come against sides sitting below us in the table.
Watch: The moment Gary Neville was interrupted by Noah Okafor’s Leeds United goal v Man Utd
If you were watching the game on Sky Sports, you’ll have noticed Gary Neville’s co-commentary in the first half. The ex-Man U right-back, in fairness, was commenting heavily in Leeds’ favour.
He was understandably in awe of Leeds’ performance, as much as the home side were not up to speed. And, the best summary was the build-up to Okafor’s second.
In the second half, Bruno Fernandes was laid in a heap over a completely fair tackle from Ethan Ampadu. Meanwhile, Leeds looked to break and hammer home our bright start. During the scramble around the edge of the Man Utd box, Neville could smell trouble.
“If you’re Leeds United, you’ve got to try capitalise right now and get two in front, because you’ve got to believe that-“ Neville said, before being interrupted by Okafor’s volley flying into the far corner.
Noah Okafor seizes huge Leeds United opportunity with biggest moment since joining
It was perfect timing from Okafor and shows exactly what he brings to the table. He exudes a level of confidence that we’ve sorely missed in the squad with his injury.
The first goal was what we’ve missed. Latching onto a cross and supporting Calvert-Lewin in the box, Okafor got on the end of a dangerous ball in.
His second was his personality typified. Few players in our side would have the bravery to volley that from 20 yards. And, he was rewarded with the luck of a deflection.
