Leeds United have Noah Okafor to thank for ending a 45-year wait for a league win at Old Trafford, scoring twice against Manchester United.
The Whites sit six points clear with six games to play. Not many would have expected that outcome on Monday as we made our way to Old Trafford.
Manchester United awaited away from home, and for Leeds, it was an incredibly memorable night for Daniel Farke and his squad.
Noah Okafor stuns Old Trafford as Leeds United extend lead over relegation zone
It was another blistering start at Old Trafford for United as Noah Okafor profited from some excellent work out on the flanks.
First Gabriel Gudmundsson’s perfect cross nearly yielded an opener, before Jayden Bogle’s testing delivery fell kindly to Okafor for a superbly calm finish. An equally cool celebration followed.
Okafor then doubled Leeds’ lead with a deflected volley just before the half-hour mark. The Swiss winger pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the box to silence Old Trafford.
After Lisandro Martinez was rightly dismissed for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair, the home side surprisingly gained impetus. They clawed a goal back through Casemiro.
However, Leeds deservedly saw off the threat in added time to move six clear of the relegation zone.
Liverpool star Hugo Ekitike reacts to Noah Okafor’s stunning Leeds United performance
It was the best moment of Okafor’s time at Leeds since joining from AC Milan for £18million. He’s had a few big moments already, but none are likely to ever top a brace at Old Trafford.
Okafor took to Instagram with a fitting message about what was a momentous evening for the winger:
“Look mommy i scored twice at Old Trafford,” he wrote.
Amongst those congratulating him in the comments was Liverpool star Hugo Ekitike, commenting with a simple message:
Leeds United have been crying out for Noah Okafor’s confidence in the final third
It’s no real surprise that we’ve scored four in our last two, when Okafor has started those games after his return from injury.
We looked devoid of drive and confidence in the final third while he was injured. To have him back has made such a difference not only to him, but to Calvert-Lewin and others in our attack too.
His celebration said everything. It’s the swagger we’ve been missing, and it could go a long way towards securing our survival.
