Sky Sports: 'World-class' Newcastle star now top target for Champions League side in £60m deal

Newcastle United are facing a battle to keep their top stars this summer, with one Champions League club making one of their players a 'top target' for the transfer window.

The Magpies currently sit 14th in the Premier League table following defeat to Crystal Palace this past weekend, leaving their hopes of qualifying for European football next season clinging by a thread, and manager Eddie Howe's future up in the air despite reports there are no plans for a change.

But with no Europe to entice top stars, a host of players are expected to be targeted for a potential move away from St James' Park, and now it has emerged that Bayern Munich are increasingly serious about a move to tempt on player away.

Bayern Munich Want Anthony Gordon

According to a report by Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have made Anthony Gordon their 'top target' for the left-winger position ahead of the summer window.

Bayern look on course to retain their domestic title, while they also have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals following a 2-1 first-leg win over Real Madrid and have broken the league record for goals scored in a season with five games remaining.

But Vincent Kompany is keen to add even more firepower to his squad ahead of next season, and England international Gordon has emerged as the number one name on their shortlist of options for the left-wing.

Bayern are understood to be willing to pay up to €70m (£60m) for the winger, who has been described as 'world-class', and it seems that the decision now rests on what Gordon wants to do.

Should Gordon agree to make the switch, Bayern will press ahead with their plans to get a deal done for him. However, club chiefs are also keeping alternative options open, with Newcastle unlikely to make any potential exit easy.

Gordon Would Thrive in Germany

Gordon had a difficult start to the season, but after being moved into a more central position and given more freedom by Eddie Howe, he has now netted 17 goals in all competitions for the club, including 10 in 12 Champions League appearances.

Luis Diaz, Harry Kane and Michael Olise have all thrived under Kompany in the Bundesliga, and adding another Premier League-proven forward with great pace and versatility would be great for them, and likely see Gordon take his game to another level.

Newcastle will be desperate to keep hold of him as Howe looks to rebuild the squad, but it may prove difficult to say no to big money if he agrees to make the switch, as they found out with Alexander Isak last year.
