Robbie Fowler has questioned Arne Slot's decision to reveal that Alexander Isak may not be able to play for more than 45 minutes in Liverpool's second-leg Champions League quarterfinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain.

Heading into the second leg at Anfield, Isak's name was a surprising inclusion on the Reds' teamsheet, with the Swedish striker set to feature alongside fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike. However, prior to kickoff, Slot revealed that Isak, who broke his leg back in December, may not be able to play more than 45 minutes against the defending European Champions, an admission that left Fowler stunned.

Speaking to Amazon Prime, Slot said, "If you include [Florian] Wirtz to that, it is only 88 minutes they play together. The thinking is that, as we all know, we need to score goals, and there are goals in these players. They are two target men, two players we can play into."

He added, "They can score goals, as I just said, and as you might not know, Alex will not be able to play much more than 45 minutes. If you have to bring him with the possibility of extra-time, then it makes sense for me to start."

However, the decision to reveal that Isak may only last the first half left Fowler bemused.

"I can't believe he's done it, in fairness. You come out and more or less given the tactic away, really, straight away," said Fowler of Slot's comments.

Alexander Isak

Arne Slot said Alexander Isak is unlikely to last much more than 45 minutes of Liverpool's Champions League clash against PSG

"If he changes after 45 minutes, that means there's going to be a little bit of a change in the dynamics or the formation or the tactics of Liverpool. So for me, that doesn't make sense."

Amazon Prime host Gabby Logan then turned to Wayne Rooney, adding the Manchester United forward looked "quizzical" following Slot's Isak admission.

"Yeah. I just think, is Alex on fire, and he feels like he's got more in him?" questioned Rooney.

"If someone has already played 45 minutes, you'd imagine Arne Slot has already told - whether it's Mo Salah - you're coming on at half-time. And if that doesn't happen, there's another issue, another situation. It's surprising."

Since returning from injury, Isak has played just 33 minutes for Liverpool. He came on off the bench against PSG in the first leg of the quarterfinal tie, which saw the Reds lose 2-0 in Paris.

He also came on off the bench during the Reds weekend win over Fulham, playing 21 minutes in what was his first appearance at Anfield since Liverpool's 2-0 win over Brighton back in December.
