Liverpool thought they had a route back into their Champions League clash with PSG when they were awarded a penalty, only to see VAR overturn the call.

The Reds were chasing a 2-0 lead on aggregate when the ball broke inside the box and rolled into the path of Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine midfielder did well to get his body between Willian Pacho and the goal, forcing contact between the pair.

Mac Allister hit the deck, and Liverpool were awarded a spot-kick. Anfield believed and for a moment the Reds looked like they had a route to an unlikely semi-final spot. Speaking on Amazon Prime Mark Clattenburg explained it was a clumsy challenge and he didn't expect VAR to get involved.

Over on Sky Sports, Tim Sherwood agreed with the former referee: "I think it's a definite penalty. I think it's a definite penalty. Oh no, it's soft! He buys it. He's very clever. But l don't think it will be overturned."

He added: "There was contact! Yes, it's soft, but in my opinion it is a penalty."
