Liverpool put in a much better display against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night but could not overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first-leg.
The Reds knew it was going to be a big ask to come back after a poor performance in Paris, and though they worked hard, they could not make it count.
Comfortably the better team on the night, Liverpool were undone by some wayward attacking play and were punished by two moments of quality from Ousmane Dembele. Here’s how we rated the players on a disappointing night at Anfield.

We needed so much more…

Defence
Giorgi Mamardashvili: 4 – Did well to thwart Warren Zaire-Emery at his feet before blocking Dembele’s follow-up but he was far too erratic with his kicking where more finesse was needed.
Jeremie Frimpong: 3 – Just doesn’t look defensively secure at all. One awful give away for an easy pass out to Mohamed Salah in the first-half summed it up. Subbed at half-time.
Ibrahima Konate: 7 (Man of the Match – Massive block to deny Dembele who would likely have made it 1-0 in the first-half. Otherwise did well on the front foot to keep Liverpool moving forward and made a really good block on Bradley Barcola late on. One of a few big interventions from the Frenchman.
Virgil van Dijk: 5 – Decent night for the skipper who largely kept PSG at bay comfortably.

Milos Kerkez: 3 – Inexplicably had Liverpool’s best two chances with the score at 0-0. Unlucky to see the first expertly saved by Matvey Safonov but should have done better when arriving at the back stick for a second chance after being found once again by Mohamed Salah. Lacked the necessary quality on the ball.
Midfield
Ryan Gravenberch: 6 – A better performance from Gravenberch who was the most front-footed of the Liverpool midfielders. Provided much more thrust than for much of the season, with a number of trademark bursts forward.
Alexis Mac Allister: 3 – Played a couple of wayward early passes set the tone for what was another difficult outing for Mac Allister. Looks half a yard off the pace still and though he did well to win a penalty which was harshly overturned by VAR, he was at fault for the goal as he failed to close enough to Dembele.

Where does this leave Arne Slot?

Dominik Szoboszlai: 4 – Not a great display from Szoboszlai, but there was no real sign of his claims that he would ‘die’ on the pitch. Liverpool needed a little more from their best player of the season.
Attack
Hugo Ekitike: 4 – Started brightly but was unable to really make an impact and was soon stretchered off with what could be a serious injury. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looked.
Alexander Isak: 4 – Looked sharper than expected on a surprise start, with one good burst in behind showing his striker’s instinct, though he had gone half a yard too early. Fell out of the game from there and barely had a touch. Unsurprisingly taken off at half-time as he looks to build fitness.
Florian Wirtz: 4 – Looked to get on the ball and there was some nice stuff, but was again lacking in tangible impact.

Substitutes
Mohamed Salah: 3 – Immediately put a brilliant ball in which someone really should’ve buried. Worked hard and showed some nice link up with Wirtz, but was let down by some really sloppy touches again.
Cody Gakpo: 5 – Looked sharp straight after his half-time introduction, lining up a good low effort which had to be saved from Safonov and linking the play well. Worked hard but was fairly aimless at times.
Joe Gomez: 5 – Added some much-needed physicality after coming on for the disappointing Frimpong before being bizarrely taken off after 20 minutes.
Rio Ngumoha: 6 – Predictably sharp when he came off the bench, testing Safonov with an excellent low drive which deserved better. Arguably should have been given longer on the pitch.
Curtis Jones: 4 – Offered nothing.
