Isak starts, Salah dropped, Mac Allister as No. 10
Arne Slot made five changes from the weekend’s 2-0 win over Fulham and handed Alexander Isak his first start since breaking his leg in December.

He replaced Mohamed Salah in the side and led the line in a surprise 4-2-3-1 setup, with Alexis Mac Allister stationed in the No. 10 role.
It meant Dominik Szoboszlai partnered Ryan Gravenberch in midfield while Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike started on the left and right wings respectively.
No early goal – and another injury
The atmosphere inside Anfield was deafening as those thousands packed into the stands looked to give the Reds every advantage as they started fast against the European champions.
There were however very few chances to show for it, with the most dangerous moment in the opening 20 minutes coming when Giorgi Mamardashvili was caught off his line only to backtrack and punch Ousmane Dembele’s effort clear.

Liverpool were dealt a huge blow before the half-hour as Ekitike went down with an injury off the ball and needed to be stretchered off as Salah took his place.
Salah almost created a goal immediately, with his cross forced towards goal by Milos Kerkez only for heroics from Matvei Safonov to keep it out and then Marquinhos to deny Virgil van Dijk an Origi-like rebound.
At the other end there was a vital intervention from Liverpool’s Parisian, Ibrahima Konate, as PSG ended the half looking the more likely scorers.

Liverpool battle but succumb to European quality
Isak was brought off at half-time as expected, with the Swede having touched the ball just five times, as Slot introduced Cody Gakpo along with Joe Gomez for Jeremie Frimpong.
Gakpo gave Liverpool urgency as a centre-forward, almost forcing a goal soon after coming on as he fired towards Safonov’s bottom corner only to be denied at the last minute.
Another brilliant pass from Salah created an opportunity for Kerkez at the far post, but with the left-back taking it on his right foot his effort sailed wide of the post.

With half an hour to play the tempo increased and a basketball game began to play out, which led to PSG conceding a penalty as Mac Allister went down only for the decision to be overturned by a VAR review.
Then the dream was over, with Dembele picking up the ball outside the box and placing it into the bottom corner beyond Mamardashvili to make it 1-0 on the night and 3-0 overall.

Dembele added another late on to hammer home the Reds’ misery as PSG appear set for another run to the final.
It was a battling game from Liverpool and there were bright moments even after the first goal – not least from Rio Ngumoha – but they exit the Champions League with a strong sense that this could be the end of the Arne Slot era.
