Two icons, two very different emotions: Salah benched before emotional goodbye, Griezmann’s ultimate tribute

After 83 games, 47 goals, 19 assists and one Big Ears trophy, Mohamed Salah’s UEFA Champions League career with Liverpool has come to end.

Foreshadowing some of the emotion that will come when his Reds career wraps up at the end of the season, the Egyptian took time to soak up the Anfield atmosphere after his side were knocked out of the tournament comprehensively by Paris Saint-Germain; a 2-0 home defeat making it a 4-0 loss on aggregate.

Mo Salah will leave Liverpool holding these club Champions League records:

– Most goals

– Most assists

– Most appearances

One club legend who was not overly sympathetic towards a fellow club icon was Graeme Souness.

Speaking on Amazon Prime, Souness put Salah in Liverpool’s top three all time players behind Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard. But, he said this season, “he’s dropped off a cliff”.

“When you get to 33, 34, it’s like dropping off a cliff or it’s a slow decline,” said Souness.

“And in Salah’s case, the numbers will tell you – he’s dropped off a cliff.”

“And then to throw that tantrum and blame everyone else but himself, I think it’s a bit much.

“He feels that the club are not showing him any respect for what he’s done for the club – talk about that when you finish playing. When you’re a current player, it’s all about what you’re going to do tomorrow.”

Salah started on the bench tonight, with Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, who went off with what looked like a serious injury, preferred.

Speaking on BBC after the game, football pundit Julien Laurens lashed the Dutchman’s selection and tactics.

“I don’t want to blame Arne Slot again but that line-up to start was nonsense,”

“It should not have been Isak from the start.”

He added: “I don’t understand! He made errors in the first leg with his lineup, the way they setup and…tonight is not the game to get it wrong…he had to get it right from the beginning.

“He let the team down, the club down and the fans down.”

Another club legend about to leave his club, Antoine Griezmann, endured no such farewell; instead, he partied with the home fans as his side celebrated a first Champions League semi final since 2017, overcoming Barcelona on aggregate despite getting pipped 2-1 on the night.

On CBS Sports Golazo, Griezmann, who will move to Orlando in Major League Soccer next season, received the ultimate compliment a French footballer can: praise and thanks from Thierry Henry.

“Antoine, I have something to tell you,” he said.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for French football, the national team, and simply for football. You’ve given me a lot.”

How good is this? ❤️

Antoine Griezmann. By himself. In the middle of the pitch. Singing along with Atletico Madrid fans after reaching the Champions League semi-final.

What a special moment.
