Andoni Iraola in frame to replace Eddie Howe as Newcastle United manager

Eddie Howe is under pressure at Newcastle United and faces Andoni Iraola this weekend.

Andoni Iraola is the red-hot favourite with bookmakers to become the next Newcastle United manager.

As it stands, Eddie Howe retains the backing of the Toon hierarchy following the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. The loss left Newcastle sitting 14th - with hopes of European qualification all but faded.

A section of the away end booed Howe and his players as they thanked the travelling support at the full-time whistle. Ironically, Bournemouth are Newcastle’s next opponents at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Bookmakers view on Newcastle United

Odds on Howe being the next Premier League manager sacked are as short as 5/2 - reduced from 6/1 a week ago. The front-runners in the race are Oliver Glasner (6/4) and Arne Slot (2/1).

The Gazette understands Toon CEO David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson will not make any hasty decisions over the managerial situation. That has not stopped bookies from taking bets on Newcastle’s next potential manager.

Iraola - set to step down at Bournemouth in the coming weeks - has stormed into the lead. It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Spaniard will not pen a new contract amid interest from Athletic Bilbao.

There is also rumoured Premier League interest but, as a Basque native, there are strong suggestions he will return home. Here is a list of the possible candidates to succeed Howe should Newcastle pull the trigger.

Andoni Iraola - 6/4

Jose Mourinho - 10/1

Oliver Glasner - 14/1

Marco SIlva - 14/1

Cesc Fabregas - 20/1

Eddie Howe on Newcastle United future

Speaking before the Palace defeat, Howe reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle. He told reporters: "For me, nothing has changed. I'm absolutely 100% committed to the job. That commitment has never wavered from my side.

"I've been working during the break to make sure that we come back a stronger team. I think, in this day and age, it's very difficult to look too far in the long-term. I can only look at these seven games and make sure that we perform at our very best level."
