Hugo Ekitike injury update after Liverpool’s 2-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League.
Hugo Ekitike could face up to nine months on the Liverpool sidelines, it has been suggested.
The striker was stretchered off in the Reds’ 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg at Anfield. Ekitike went down innocuously and tried to get up a couple of times but could not continue. He picked up a suspected Achilles injury.
The France international’s issue will be assessed further today, although head coach Arne Slot admitted that he expects Ekitike’s issue to be serious. Slot said: "Not too good. I think we could all see that it didn't look well and didn't look good. Let's wait and see what it will be. But we could all see it didn't look good.
"In the second half he went home so I haven't seen him yet. Losing a game is already very hard, especially in the way we lost it, but again – as it seems to be – losing a player is something we've had so many times this season.
"It's especially very hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially not at this moment of time in the season."
Ekitike’s involvement in this summer’s World Cup for France is in significant doubt. And according to the popular social media account @physioscout, which provides football injury analysis, the £79 million summer signing could be unavailable for at least seven months, meaning he will miss the opening months of next season.
A post on X said: “Hugo Ekitike had to be stretchered off in Liverpool vs. PSG with an Achilles injury.
“Typical non-contact push-off mechanism during acceleration usually points towards an Achilles rupture. Ekitike was also seen palpating his Achilles/calf complex after the incident.
“Expected Recovery Time: 7-9 months+. Scans will be necessary to determine the extent of the injury. However, this one doesn't look good.”
