Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has announced his retirement from football and has taken on a managerial role.

The 34-year-old failed to make the impact it was hoped he would during his short stint with the Reds. Having signed for the club from Newcastle United in January 2023, he made just eight appearances in the Garibaldi.

After spells in Turkey and with Burnley, Shelvey joined Dubai outfit Arabian Falcons last year. However, he has now decided to hang up his boots and has been appointed manager of the UAE second division side.

Shelvey said in a statement: “I’m excited to take on this challenge and lead the Falcons forward. We have a talented group and a clear vision to achieve promotion and build something special in Dubai. My ambition is to climb to the very top of management and this is the perfect project to prove myself and what I’m capable of.”

Shelvey has made eight appearances for the Falcons this season. His switch to the dugout is described as forming part of an “ambitious project” under new ownership led by former Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon, who is co-owner and head of football operations at the club.

“Jonjo is the perfect fit for our project,” Puncheon said. “His experience at the highest level, combined with his character and hunger, will inspire the team as we push for promotion and long-term success.”

Shelvey replaces Harry Agombar as manager of the Falcons. Agombar will take on the role of sporting director at the club following the reshuffle.

The Falcons are pushing for promotion this term. Their final five games of the campaign will be the subject of a behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the start of Shelvey’s managerial career.
