Alexander Isak looks foolish - Liverpool comments backfire as Newcastle United relish downfall

Alexander Isak has scored more goals against Liverpool than for his new club as Newcastle United supporters continue to have the last laugh.

Alexander Isak will end his first season at Liverpool trophyless after crashing out of the Champions League last night.

Paris Saint-Germain completed the double over two legs with a 1-0 victory to silence Anfield - and place further pressure on Arne Slot as manager. The Dutchman handed Isak his first start since returning from a broken leg.

However, much to Newcastle United fans’ delight, the 26-year-old continued to look hopeless in a Liverpool shirt. Isak was hooked at the break after a leggy and uninspiring half that saw him touch the ball just five times.

Alexander Isak comments backfire

With just three goals in all competitions this season - less than he scored against Liverpool as a Newcastle player - perhaps now is a perfect time to resurface Isak’s comments last summer. After downing tools to push through a St James’ Park exit, the Swede highlighted trophies - which he will not win this year - as the key factor behind moving to Anfield.

“It’s a mixture of what the club is building, but what they’re building on top of what the club already is, the history of the club,” Isak told the Liverpool website. “By getting the chance to be a part of this, I want to create history. I want to win trophies.

“That’s ultimately the biggest motivation for me and I feel like this is the perfect place for me to grow even further and to take my game to the next level and help the team as well. I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it.

“It’s so exciting. It’s something difficult to put into words, I think you have to experience it and then explain. I think we all know what Liverpool is about, the fans and what they’re about as well. So, yeah, looking forward to getting to experience that.”

‘The relationship changed’ - Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe admitted the relationship with Isak became strained once he refused to train or play. He told reporters: "Alex and I always enjoyed a great relationship. I loved working with him. I hope he enjoyed working with us.

"It was mutually beneficial. We helped him become the player he in part is today and he helped us as a team achieve some unbelievable milestones and was part of a very successful team. The moment he went on strike our relationship did change and that was probably a turning point in our relationship."
