Chris Wilder believes he has the backing of “patience” from Sheffield United’s owners as he prepares for a major summer rebuild - but admits he is already putting himself under pressure to deliver.
Chris Wilder believes he will have the backing of “patience” from above as he plots Sheffield United’s big summer rebuild - but that doesn’t stop him putting himself under huge pressure to get it right for his boyhood club. The Blades are gearing up for what could be a big turnover once this current season is officially over in a few weeks.
The Blades chief has already begun the process of planning for next season and beyond, believing a big refresh of players is necessary to transform the culture at Bramall Lane both on and off the pitch.
As many as 20 players could move on as Wilder looks to trim the numbers at his disposal, with too many players currently sat in the stands on matchday and training throughout the week knowing they realistically have little chance of making the squad.
For their part COH Sports, United’s ownership group, seem to have learned the lessons of last year when they replaced Wilder with Ruben Selles and backed a scattergun recruitment approach that saw just over £19m spent on permanent additions alone, with loan arrangements expected to nudge that tally north of £20m.
“20 players” - Chris Wilder outlines huge scale of Sheffield United rebuild as owners’ stance becomes clear
That is not expected to be the case this time around as United tighten their belts following the Premier League parachute payments tap being officially turned off. But Wilder has shown in the past he is capable of assembling a squad without a huge budget, and will get the chance to do so again.
"You have to have patience from above and speaking to the owners and Steve [Bettis, chief executive], I've got that backing,” Wilder said, before Saturday’s win over Hull City ended his side’s six-game winless streak. “But you're putting pressure on yourself.
"I'm not feeling good about myself at the moment because I'm part of the run of us not winning in six games [before Hull]. We all take that responsibility. Nobody enjoys that losing feeling. I'm delighted with the career I've had but stll, I’m hungry for more. And the players need to have that hunger and that desire for the feeling that we're all after.”
A couple of pieces of United’s 2026/27’s puzzle have already been put in place, with confirmation earlier this week that Tom Davies will leave the Lane this summer when his contract officially expires. As we revealed yesterday, fellow midfielder Jairo Riedewald will see his contract option exercised to keep him at United next term.

“There are going to be big changes in the summer,” Wilder added. “I think we all recognise that. The six loan players will go back, there are going to be some free transfers. Some contracts won't get renewed.
“There might be a couple of players that leave. There'll be some players who need to go out on loan. Predominantly the ones that were signed in the summer through the AI situation, going out to gain experience.
“And then there'll be boys that won't take us forward. So there's going to be a big change. We're overstocked as it is. But there might be 15 to 20 players leave and there'll be players coming in.
“At the start of my last season we brought 10 players in, to add to the players who were here. So I'm not scared about resetting and going again. I'm confident of what we've done in the past in building a team. But we'll be judged on what happens in the summer.”
