Lloyd Kelly parted ways with Newcastle United in January 2025 and joined Juventus permanently last summer. The idea of a return to St James’ Park has now been floated.

The 2024/25 campaign wasn’t great for the Englishman.Sport Witness covered how the Italian press constantly criticised him, as he took a while to settle into life in Turin.

This season, things have changed. He has been an important player for the Old Lady, featuring 40 times in all competitions. Luciano Spalletti has trusted him arguably more than any other player, as Kelly has started all but two Serie A games in 2026.

Even under Igor Tudor, he had come in with key performances, scoring vital goals against Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan.

All of this might not be enough for the defender to stay at Juve in the long-term.

Newcastle United can attempt to bring him back to England.

Finances can force sale

Today,TuttoSport look at Juventus’ troubles with finances. While they are currently fourth in Serie A, they can still miss out on Champions League qualification when the season ends.

To ease financial troubles, the Bianconeri can make multiple sales, especially as they have plans to restructure the squad anyway. Apart from Federico Gatti, Kelly is a possible candidate to leave.

The newspaper believe Newcastle United have tried to bring the 27-year-old back in the past. Crystal Palace did the same and the two clubs can return to the fray for him in the summer.

Juve would be happy with a fee of €30m, with the Magpies and the Eagles unlikely to find that excessive. Even if Kelly’s sale will leave Spalletti’s side light in the backline, they have already identified potential replacements.

Our take: TuttoSport unusual claims

TuttoSport sometimes make optimistic claims. In this case, they state Newcastle United tried to sign Kelly last summer.

This would have been just after his permanent exit from the Magpies was confirmed. Whether they tried to get him back whilst making a profit is unknown, but it would have been unusual.

To be clear, Tuttosport state: ‘Crystal Palace and Newcastle had already made moves last summer and would certainly not be intimidated by a €30 million asking price.’
