Sunderland and Everton locked in £20m transfer battle for Leicester City winger with 16 goal…

Everton and Sunderland are weighing up summer moves for Abdul Fatawu, with Leicester ready to sell the winger for around £20million amid relegation fears

Sunderland and Everton are both expected to revive their interest in Abdul Fatawu this summer, according to reports, with the Leicester City wide man emerging as a key name to watch ahead of the transfer window.

Football Insider claims the two Premier League clubs remain firmly in the race for the 22-year-old, who is said to be unwilling to drop into League One should Leicester City suffer relegation. Sources cited in the report suggest Fatawu would actively push for a move if that scenario materialises.

Both Sunderland and Everton are said to be preparing to rekindle previous interest, with Fatawu having already reportedly come close to a switch to the Stadium of Light last summer before opting to remain at Leicester in a bid to help secure promotion.

That gamble has not paid off. The Foxes are currently struggling near the foot of the Championship table, sitting four points from safety with just a handful of games remaining. Their difficult position on the pitch is compounded by financial issues off it, which could force sales if relegation is confirmed.

Fatawu has been one of Leicester’s standout performers despite their struggles, registering nine league goals and seven assists this season. His form has only strengthened interest, with the winger viewed as one of the club’s most valuable assets. Across his time with the Foxes on loan and permanently, the attacker has scored 16 times in 97 games.

The report adds that Leicester are now resigned to losing the Ghana international and are prepared to sanction a deal below his previous valuation. While his release clause is believed to be around £30million, it is claimed he could be available for closer to £20million this summer. Former Everton boss David Moyes is keen to strengthen his squad further, but Sunderland are expected to provide strong competition as they look to continue building a young, high-upside attacking unit under Régis Le Bris.

As ever with reports of this nature, the claims should be treated with caution - but the situation surrounding Fatawu is one that appears to be gathering momentum heading into the summer window and his name continues to be linked with Sunderland.
