Albion goalkeeper link will be first of many in double Dutch summer of doubt

The report comes as they head into what will be a summer of speculation over their goalkeeping position.

Noah Atubolu of Freiburg is the name being mentioned by one source in Germany.

Sky’s Florian Plettenberg, who recently raised Bayer Leverkusen’s interest in Fabian Hurzeler, believes Atubolu is “quite high on the list” for the Seagulls.

Plettenberg previously told followers that Verbruggen might leave the Seagulls this summer but might not.

Which is about the size of it as we head into the summer.

Verbruggen and compatriot Jan Paul van Hecke both feel like they are reaching the point at which previous rising stars with the Seagulls have moved on.

But that does not mean they have to.

To the usual names being linked with such players, Tottenham are likely to be added should they stay up.

That is down to the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach in North London.

Such a situation always makes it easy for bosses to be linked with their former players.

In reality, players do not follow their coaches to new clubs as often as you might think.

Albion have been linked with Swansea players under Graham Potter, Shakhtar players under De Zerbi and even Barcelona youngsters under Oscar Garcia. But none of it ever happened.

Verbruggen and van Hecke will become even more valuable if they impress at the World Cup.

One wonders whether, if they think one or both might go, Albion will wait until after the summer tournament to do business.

But Fabian Hurzeler has made it clear he wants to keep van Hecke long-term and sees him as a future captain.

He has not said similar about Verbruggen, as far as I have heard, because he has not been asked a direct question along those lines. But he has spoken about how he has improved.

What happens in goal will, however, be intriguing.

The best goalkeeper in the Championship is an Albion player and Carl Rushworth appears to have the ability with the ball at feet which Hurzeler requires.

But the line of succession, if indeed Verbruggen moves on, might not be as simple if Hurzeler and his staff, including goalkeeper coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, have other players in mind.

Rushworth and James Beadle, on loan at Birmingham City, were both signed before the current management arrived.

Could ten Rouwelaar’s presence at Albion even be a factor which helps keep Verbruggen at the club for now? That might be wishful thinking.

Albion fans know all about these summer windows.

They know there will be departures but not too many.

Tweeters such as Plettenburg will know there will be activity and a captive audience.

We might reach the situation we had with the Leverkusen link, where the Sky reporter in England asks Hurzeler about Sky’s own story in Germany.

Plettenburg wrote of Atubolu: “One of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season."

That sounds interesting but he will not be the last name linked with the Seagulls.
