Arne Slot warns of more change for Liverpool this summer: “We have to sell to buy”

Arne Slot has claimed Liverpool’s “future looks really good” but admitted more change is likely after “10 players” were sold to fund last year’s rebuild.

Defeat to PSG on Tuesday night means Liverpool’s only objective in the final month of the season is finishing in the Premier League‘s top five.

That this is not yet guaranteed is a shameful reflection on Slot’s second campaign in charge, having gone into the season after spending £446.2 million to defend their title.

In his post-match interview with Prime Video, the head coach looked at more change to come after explaining Liverpool sold 10 players to “recoup money” to sign “four, five, six.”

Liverpool Sales: 2025/26 Season

Player Fee / Status 2024/25 Starts

Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich) £66m 38

Darwin Nunez (Al-Hilal) £56.3m 17

Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen) £35m 13

Ben Doak (Bournemouth) £25m 0

Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford) £18m 20

Tyler Morton (Lyon) £15m 3

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid) £8.4m 37

Nat Phillips (West Brom) £3.5m 0

Kostas Tsimikas (Roma) Loan 18

Harvey Elliott (Aston Villa) Loan 6

Vitezslav Jaros (Ajax) Loan 1

James McConnell (Ajax) Loan 2

“I think much has been said recently and maybe by many people also through this year that the club is in a transition,” Slot said.

“We’ve sold eight, 10 players to recoup money to sign four, five, six very talented and good players.

“Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer, like we lost Trent on a free transfer.

“This model of the club means that we have to sell usually to buy. It’s a big challenge, it already was last season and it’s going to be a challenge in the summer again.

“But this club has also showed many times that this model works and we can be very successful with this model.

“I think we’ve signed, which you could see today, very good and talented players. Let’s hope they are all fit.

“Most of them go into their second season in the Premier League, so as I’ve said many times the future looks really good, especially if we can add a few good signings after good players leave as well this summer.”

Liverpool’s only sales from Slot’s core squad from last season were Luis Diaz (Bayern Munich), Darwin Nunez (Al-Hilal), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen) and Caoimhin Kelleher (Brentford).

The remainder of their departures came with those outside of the first team: Ben Doak (Bournemouth), Tyler Morton (Lyon), Nat Phillips (West Brom) and later Trent Kone-Doherty (Molde) and James Norris (Shelbourne).

Kostas Tsimikas (Roma), Harvey Elliott (Aston Villa), Vitezslav Jaros (Ajax) and James McConnell (Ajax) were loaned out while the club lost Diogo Jota in tragic circumstances.

Eight players were brought into the first-team squad: Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Giovanni Leoni and Freddie Woodman.
