Dominic Calvert-Lewin makes headlines for wrong reasons but his timing couldn't be better

Leeds United's win against Manchester United on Monday night ended over 40 years of league heartbreak at Old Trafford, and one man in particular played like a man on a mission as he bids to land his World Cup dream

Thomas Tuchel didn't travel to Old Trafford to watch Manchester United's defeat to Leeds. But perhaps he should have done.

Because if he had, the England manager would have witnessed a centre forward performance from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, that smacked of someone who knows this will be his last shot at going to a World Cup.

The Leeds striker might have found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Due to his involvement in two incidents which left United's interim manager Michael Carrick so incensed, he said something interesting for a change.

Carrick was seething with what he thought was a foul by Calvert-Lewin on Leny Yoro in the build up to Leeds' opening goal. What he should have been mad at, however, is how easily his defender got outmuscled by Calvert-Lewin. He was simply too strong for him and wanted it more.

The second incident resulted in Calvert-Lewin having his hair tugged by Lisandro Martinez. Which resulted in the Argentine being sent off. Which was another moral victory for Calvert-Lewin.

It's true Calvert-Lewin missed two golden chances to score at Old Trafford. And his recent run of form has been far from prolific. But his overall performance against United was outstanding.

He gave the United defence a torrid time from start to finish, with his work rate, attitude, runs and hold up play.

It felt like an old school display, the kind centre backs dread. Because Calvert-Lewin isn't afraid of the physical battle.

He knows how to look after himself, having once spoken of how he had no choice but to stand up to hard-nosed defenders, having joined the uncompromising environment of non-league football with Stalybridge Celtic on loan at the start of his career.

When Tuchel looks around to decide which striker will go to the World Cup as back up to Harry Kane this summer, he will not be spoiled for choice.

But of those under consideration, no-one has done more to state their case than Calvert-Lewin.

He has rediscovered his passion for the game again since joining Leeds. He has flourished as the focal point of their attack, scored goals and remained fit. He was also included in Tuchel's last England squad.

"What I needed most was the opportunity to play and showcase what I am really capable of,” he said. "Over the last two or three years, it had been difficult to build momentum and confidence.

"When Leeds made it clear I'd be the No.9 and the main man to lead the line, I couldn't wait to get started."

Calvert-Lewin turned 29 last month and is approaching his peak. And with the greatest stage of all approaching fast, his timing couldn't be better.
