“It is what it is” – Mac Allister speaks to foreign broadcaster about Liverpool failures

FRANKFURT AM MAIN, GERMANY – OCTOBER 22: Alexis Mac Allister of Liverpool FC during the UEFA Champions League match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Liverpool

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister says the Premier League side were expecting to have a successful campaign this season.

Arne Slot arrived at Anfield in June 2024 and guided Liverpool to Premier League success in his debut season.

Towards the end of that season, the Reds were successful in extending Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contracts. Last summer, the Merseyside club invested over €450m on new signings to reshape their squad.

This made Liverpool one of the firm contenders to win the title this season but they’re far from that.

The Reds have failed to win even 50% of their league matches [15 wins from 32 matches] and are now in the battle to qualify for the Champions League.

Earlier this month, Manchester City knocked Slot’s side from the FA Cup. On Tuesday, the Champions League run came to an end with a 4-0 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

After the first leg, L’Equipe were critical of Slot’s tactics.

Liverpool came up against better team

After Tuesday’s loss, Alexis Mac Allister gave an interview to Portuguese broadcaster Sport TV and O Jogo have relayed his comments.

The Argentina international insists Liverpool fell short despite their efforts to overcome a 2-0 first leg deficit against PSG.

“It was a different game in the return leg, we were more aggressive, we tried to press, we had our opportunities, but we played against the best team in the world. The result is what it is, and we have to congratulate the opponent,” he said.

Arne Slot’s side are now fifth in the table, four points ahead of sixth placed Chelsea and 18 behind leaders Arsenal.

The 27-year-old midfielder was honest in admitting Liverpool have failed to meet expectations this season.

“It’s obvious that it was a difficult and challenging season. If you had asked me at the beginning of the season what I expected, I would have said that this team was going to fight and win competitions, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” Mac Allister explained.

“We have to keep working, because this year doesn’t do justice to the club. Of course, we remember Diogo Jota, and it was a complicated period, but we can’t use him as an excuse. I don’t believe that’s why this year was so complicated for us.”

What next for Mac Allister and Liverpool

Liverpool have six league matches left this season. The Merseyside club and Alexis Mac Allister will be hoping to finish this season on a bright note. That would be possible if the Reds qualify for the Champions League.

The South American will then have to focus on the World Cup with Argentina in June.

He’s managed five goals and five assists from 49 matches for the Premier League side this season.
