'Play in the Premier League?' - Chris Sutton likens £25m-rated Celtic player to Rangers ace

Chris Sutton has compared an in-demand Celtic player to Rangers attacker Thelo Aasgaard.

Aasgaard has not been a first-team regular at Rangers, but with Ryan Naderi out injured, he could get more game time until the end of the season.

The Norway international has struggled to adapt to life in Scotland, but has shown signs of progress in recent weeks.

Chris Sutton likens Benjamin Nygren to Thelo Aasgaard

Sutton has compared Celtic attacker Benjamin Nygren to Aasgaard in terms of their playing style.

The 24-year-old moved to Parkhead in the summer and has become a first-team regular for the Hoops.

He has adapted quickly to life in Scotland and has been a goal-scoring and creative threat for them.

The Sweden international, who is valued at £25m, has been tipped for a Premier League move after one season in the Scottish Premiership.

In Sutton’s view, what makes Aasgaard and Nygren similar is that they will not get beyond the lone striker or play off them, but instead look for the ball at their feet and try to make things happen themselves.

He told The Warm-Up: “I was also reading about possible moves down south for Benjamin Nygren. £25m. What do you think? Could he play in the Premier League?

“I would like to have played with him. We were discussing it yesterday. I think he’s a similar player to Aasgaard at Rangers, where he will not get beyond you as a striker.

“He won’t necessarily play off you. He’ll look for the ball and try and create himself.”

How has Aasgaard’s first year at Rangers been?

The 23-year-old did not arrive with a lot of fanfare, but the expectation was that he would be starting most games.

Initially, that did happen, but his lack of end product saw him become more of a bench player.

However, as it is his first season at the club, it may be a tad harsh to judge him so quickly.

In 28 league games, the Norwegian has scored five goals and provided three assists.

Aasgaard has been more prolific in the Scottish FA Cup, but that has come against weaker opponents.

He has bagged a goal and an assist in two games, without starting a single game.

However, his struggles have been evident in Europe, as in eight Europa League games, he is yet to find the back of the net and has just a solitary assist to his name.
