A former Scottish Premiership chief executive believes it will prove difficult for any club in the league to lure Joe Gelhardt away from English football this summer.

Gelhardt, who is enjoying another impressive season on loan with Hull City in the Championship, has attracted considerable interest, with ex-Aberdeen and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness admitting that he would be surprised if the 23-year-old headed north of the border at the conclusion of the current campaign.

Glasgow giants Rangers are reported to be amongst the clubs monitoring Gelhardt, alongside numerous others, following a season in which he has notched 13 goals and four assists in a City side pushing for a top-flight berth, but Wyness has dismissed suggestions he could make the move to Scotland.

Gelhardt is widely anticipated to depart Leeds United this summer, and with the Premier League side holding the security of a further 12 months on his contract, they will be in a position to demand a transfer fee should he move on.

Hull City have made little attempt to conceal their ambition to sign Gelhardt for a third time, with owner Acun Ilicali and sporting director Jared Dublin both confirming their interest in discussions with Hull Live.

Gelhardt himself has spoken openly of his affection for the club, with all three parties expected to convene and negotiate any potential future deal once the Tigers have established which division they will be competing in next season. "I think he's going to probably go further in England," Wyness told Football Insider. "I don't believe he's going to be a Rangers' target. Rangers would love him if they could get him. But he's going to go further in England.

"He may go for some cash for Leeds, some serious money. And he may be worth a gamble from somebody who's looking at him, but we'll see.

"(Joel) Piroe is the one that would go between the groups right now. If Rangers were to get Gelhardt, they'd be very lucky. He's probably the better choice of the two, but Leeds may look to move him elsewhere."
