Transfer news: £35m Sunderland demand could dissuade European giants from pursuing summer swoop

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich could ultimately decide against pursuing a deal for Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey this summer because of the financial demands required to prise the Dutchman away from the Stadium of Light, according to reports.

After signing from boyhood club Ajax last year in a deal totalling around £21.5 million, Brobbey has gone on to establish himself as a key component in Regis Le Bris’ frontline, and has garnered a reputation as one of the most physically imposing centre-forwards currently operating in the Premier League.

To that end, an update from The Independent earlier this week suggested that Bayern are keeping tabs on Brobbey ahead of a potential move to sign him at the end of the season. While his return of six goals in 25 top flight outings may appear slightly underwhelming for a club of their status, it is understood that the Bundesliga giants have been impressed by Brobbey’s physicality, movement, and his ability to lead the line.

Moreover, while Harry Kane remains Vincent Kompany’s de facto first choice in Germany, it is expected that understudy Nicolas Jackson will return to parent club Chelsea upon the expiration of his loan agreement, further increasing the need for Bayern to bring in an alternative.

What has been said about Bayern Munich’s interest in Brian Brobbey?

But as per German outlet TZ, Brobbey may ultimately prove to be too expensive an option for Kompany’s men. It is claimed that Sunderland value their player at around £34.8 million, and that price tag, coupled with the three years left on his contract at the Stadium of Light, may convince Bayern to look elsewhere. Furthermore, there are no indications that the Black Cats have any intention of selling their number nine.

In that regard, it is suggested that Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon is also under consideration in Bavaria, with the England international’s versatility potentially a major lure for Bayern. While the 25-year-old predominantly operates as a winger, he has featured in a central role for the Magpies on numerous occasions, and could, therefore, provide both added depth in wide areas, as well as the cover for Kane that his apparent suitors are so desperately seeking.
