Boost for Tottenham as 28yo who underwent surgery in January returns to training ahead of…

Roberto De Zerbi has been handed a big boost ahead of Tottenham’s home game against Brighton.

Tottenham Hotspur find themselves reeling in 18th position in the table. They dropped to the relegation zone following West Ham’s win over Wolves last week, and when the opportunity came to immediately surpass their London rivals, Spurs floundered.

Roberto De Zerbi oversaw a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland in his first game in charge of Tottenham. The Italian tactician encountered many of the same problems as those before him. The Tottenham players lacked threat going forward and dropped their shoulders when Nordi Mukiele’s second-half strike deflected off Micky Van de Ven and found the back of the net.

Since Roberto De Zerbi has taken over, Spurs have lost Mohammed Kudus and Cristian Romero to injury. Romero has been ruled out for the remainder of the season following his collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in the defeat at Sunderland. The Argentine has not sustained a torn collateral ligament and will not undergo surgery, but the knee injury is significant enough to keep him out for at least six weeks.

Amid two big setbacks, De Zerbi has now received a positive injury update on a key Spurs player.

Rodrigo Bentancur spotted in team training

In a big boost for Tottenham, Rodrigo Bentancur returned to team training on Wednesday afternoon. A video clip released by Sky Sports News shows the central midfielder doing drills with his teammates at Hotspur Way, as Spurs prepare for the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a hamstring injury against Bournemouth in January and subsequently underwent surgery. He has missed 16 games since then, and after three months on the sidelines, the Uruguayan is gearing up to return to action. The central midfielder was a key player under former boss Thomas Frank, starting 17 out of 20 Premier League games this season.

The 28-year-old’s return to fitness is a welcome boost for the North Londoners. De Zerbi will be able to provide further update on Bentancur in his presser later this week. He will be keen to get the South American star involved in some capacity in Saturday’s game against his old club Brighton.

In another big development, James Maddison was also spotted in team training. However, caution is being urged over the England international, who suffered an ACL injury in pre-season. The Sky Sports News reporter claimed that Maddison’s involvement in sessions at this stage is purely as part of his rehabilitation and is not expected to be in a matchday squad any time soon.
