Liverpool lost 2-0 to PSG, exiting the Champions League after a 4-0 aggregate quarter-final defeat. It marks the second time in two years that the Reds have been eliminated by PSG.
In the year that spans the two Champions League defeats, Liverpool have regressed massively, falling from grace since their Premier League title victory last season.
Arne Slot is acting like a manager who knows his job is safe with almost zero consequences for his failures this season. The Dutchman was spotted laughing and joking with PSG manager Luis Enrique after full-time on Wednesday night, resulting in fan outrage online.
After full-time, Slot was interviewed by the press, and delivered worrying news.
The manager reports that Liverpool will have to sell players this summer to fund any new signings after the £460 transfer budget he was handed last summer yielded shocking results this season.
Slot said: “We need to sell in order to buy new players. But we will lose Salah and Robertson on a free, that has happened already with Trent”.
“As you know, the club that we are we need to recoup our money and to spend again”.

Liverpool have lost 18 games in all competitions this season, but it remains to be seen which players will be sold this summer. FSG decided to rip up the team that won the Premier League with several games to spare last season, but have watched Luis Diaz thrive in the Bundesliga while they have floundered since.
Van der Vaart blasts Slot after limp Champions League exit
Outspoken former footballer and pundit Rafael van der Vaart, launched a public tirade against Slot after Liverpool lost 2-0 to PSG for the second time in a week on Wednesday evening.
The former Dutch midfielder took issue with Slot’s comments on transfers in the wake of Liverpool’s biggest disappointment of the season, exiting
He said: “Arne Slot talking about ‘adding new players after selling some good players,’ and I just think to myself… what does that even mean? It is a completely ridiculous statement to make.”
“Liverpool have spent around £500 million, and what do they have to show for it? Out of the League Cup, out of the FA Cup, struggling in the league with their worst run of defeats since 2015, and a disastrous Champions League campaign.”
“This season is already a massive failure for Liverpool. And after all that disaster, your priority is to talk about moving some good players just to add new ones and rebuild again? There is absolutely no logic in this and it makes zero sense to me.”
“I’m afraid he’s clearly not the man to take Liverpool forward. Maybe he’s the one that needs to be changed in the summer.”

Who can Liverpool sell if they plan to rebuild again?
Liverpool’s squad might be filled with talented players, but the resale opportunities are limited.
FSG aren’t likely to sell the superstars they invested in the summer and they already sold most of their high value playes last summer. Mohamed Salah is inexplicably being allowed to leave for free, too while Andy Robertson is out of contract in the summer. Ibrahima Konate may be set to sign a new deal but he could very well leave on a free if an agreement isn’t announced.
Even if they were to immediately sell new signings, Wirtz is the only real option. Milos Kerkez hasn’t exactly doubled his market value this summer, while Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike have suffered serious injuries this season and are not likely to be viewed as wise business investments by top clubs.
Then there’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has been inexplicably scapegoated the last few weeks while he’s been deputising for Alisson Becker.
Curtis Jones has been linked with an exit amid his apparent fallout with Arne Slot.
Cody Gakpo is a potential high-ticket exit, but even then, he is the only real option.
This, amid reports that Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes are not long term features of FSG’s C-Suite directors, and Slot’s future is murky at best.
All in all, Liverpool are in crisis and have been since before the start of 2026.
