Bayern Munich's latest transfer plan could end up being good news for Liverpool - opinion

Liverpool and Bayern Munich have been close competitors in the transfer market for the past few seasons.

Despite the German giants’ best efforts last summer, Florian Wirtz chose to sign for Liverpool. That spurred Bayern to sign Luis Diaz in what turned out to be a brilliant bit of business.

The Michael Olise saga is another example of the two clubs being entangled in transfer speculation, and now they have identified Liverpool-linked Anthony Gordon as a top target for the upcoming window. That could actually be a benefit to the Merseyside outfit.

Bayern Munich’s Anthony Gordon interest bodes well for Liverpool

Gordon has long been linked with a move to Anfield. The Newcastle winger has close ties to the city, and always seems to cause problems when he faces us.

Liverpool have seemingly reignited their interest after Hugo Ekitike was ruled out for the rest of the year — now needing even more attacking reinforcements — but a report from Florian Plettenberg now has Bayern as favourites to land his signature.

He writes on X: “Anthony Gordon is currently FC Bayern’s top target for the left wing as reported last night. The current estimated transfer fee for a summer move is €60-70 million. Bayern are ready to invest that amount if Gordon agrees.

“It now largely depends on Gordon, while Bayern, led by Eberl/Freund, are keeping alternative options open.”

The lure of Bayern is not to be underestimated, and the explosion of Diaz at the Allianz Arena is evidence that a transition to the Bundesliga suits Premier League speedsters.

As for the alternative options he mentions, they are two players Liverpool have their eye on — Yan Diomande and Bazoumana Toure.

Liverpool have stepped up their interest in Toure this week, and Diomande has long been considered a perfect young signing to secure the future of Mohamed Salah’s position. Bayern have been right up there with Liverpool in pursuing the two Bundesliga starlets.

I’m off the idea of Gordon as a Red, so this transfer development is good news. If he agrees to a Bayern move, it would most likely boost Liverpool’s odds of landing one of their winger targets.

Liverpool could still challenge for Anthony Gordon

I personally wouldn’t, but it’s not out of the question that FSG decide to challenge Bayern for the England international.

At £50-60 million, it wouldn’t be bad business. Gordon has shown how dangerous he can be in the Champions League this season, and his energy and pressing do fit the mould of a Liverpool player.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

But if Bayern are fully in for him, it would be preferable to go after one of Diomande or Toure instead. They’re unproven in the Premier League, but their ceilings are much higher than Gordon’s, who could end up being a rather costly squad piece rather than a nailed-on starter for Arne Slot.
