'Golden' opportunity: 'There are no doubts' that top manager's 'future lies at Anfield'

Arne Slot’s future has once again been put in major doubt after reports emerge from Spain over his most likely replacement.

According to *Diario AS*‘s editor-in-chief, Aritz Gabilondo, “there are no doubts” that Xabi Alonso’s “future lies at Anfield.” Alonso has been on sabbatical since leaving Real Madrid by mutual consent earlier this season.

Between his Anfield connection from his time as a player, to his working relationship with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, there are a multitude of reasons reported as to why he would make the ideal replacement for Slot amid the Dutchman’s failures at Anfield over the last nine months.

The report from AS goes on to say Liverpool are “pushing his name most strongly,” with the consensus among Europe’s top clubs that the 44-year-old was not the only party to blame for his failed time in Madrid hotseat, winning 70% of his games in Spain.

Liverpool’s chance to sign Alonso is described as “golden” while “there are top clubs still interested” in hiring the 44-year-old ahead of what will be a crucial summer transfer window.

Transfer windows that take place in the same summer as a World Cup are often viewed as crucial moments in the ebb and flow of Europe’s elite game, and it is time for Liverpool to part ways with Slot.

Time will tell if FSG will make the brave decision to part ways with Slot, after he recently seemed to confirm he will stay, telling reporters he is heavily involved in plans for the summer.

Arne Slot is no longer the right man to lead Liverpool forward

While the British press has recently been arguing that there are mitigating factors for Liverpool’s failures this season, Slot’s performance as the club’s leader, tactical innovator and grounding point has left far too much to be desired in order for him to continue with the confidence of the supporters.

Whether or not the Dutchman can make good on the remaining year of his contract at Anfield remains to be seen. FSG could still decide to part ways with Slot, but keeping him for the 2026-27 season based on what we’ve seen this season would be a decision not grounded in the facts:

Liverpool have lost 18 games in all competitions

Liverpool have lost 5 of their last eight games

Arne Slot has inaqequately explained the problems at hand

Liverpool have been eliminated from every silverware race without a fight

Liverpool’s players have individually and collectively regressed at an alarming clip

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are leaving for free in 2 months

There is little, from a supporter’s perspective, to inspire confidence ahead of a challenging summer. Hiring Xabi Alonso would fix most of the tactical, morale and confidence-based issues.
