Sam Allardyce says there’s such an obvious striker Man Utd need to go and sign this summer

Sam Allardyce believes Manchester United should be looking to sign one of the Premier League’s top scorers this season.

Manchester United prioritised the attacking department in the transfer window last summer.

That led to deals for Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. The latter arrived from RB Leipzig in a transfer worth £74 million and instantly became the main striker following Rasmus Hojlund’s loan move to Napoli.

United could look at signing a new striker if Joshua Zirkzee leaves the club in the summer. The Netherlands international has played a bit-part role in the team this season.

Sam Allardyce thinks Man Utd should sign Igor Thiago

United’s goals have dried up in recent matches, winning just one of their last four games, but there’s still evidence of an improvement from last season.

The Red Devils moved on players like Antony and Alejandro Garnacho before signing Mbeumo and Cunha. With six games left to play in the Premier League, there are not many – if any – United fans who would change that.

Still, former England manager Sam Allardyce believes United have room for another striker.

Allardyce has told the Tippy Tappy Football podcast that United should try to sign Brentford’s Igor Thiago, who has hit the Premier League by storm.

He said: “I mean, who’s going to buy Brentford’s centre-forward? Man United need to look no further as far as I’m concerned. He’s hit the 20 mark, you don’t need to look any further.

“I thought they’d go for Mateta, but maybe with his age they thought… But the lad, he’s Brazilian, isn’t he? 20 goals and he’s got Brentford almost pushing for Europe.”

Where does Igor Thiago rank among Premier League top scorers this season?

In his debut season at Brentford, Thiago has scored 24 goals across all competitions, with 21 of them coming in the Premier League.

That means the Brazilian forward has scored one goal fewer than Man City’s Erling Haaland (21) and is ranked second in the Premier League top scorer charts.

Mbeumo and Sesko have scored nine goals each in the Premier League.

Brentford will be hoping to fight off any interest in Thiago to ensure he stays with the club for longer than one season.
