Opinion: Why Everton should target Brighton's Mats Wieffer this summer, he's actually perfect…

Everton will be looking to sign a new right-back this summer – and Mats Wieffer of Brighton might just be the perfect signing for David Moyes.

A new right-back is said to be one of three priorities for Everton in the next window, which will be music to a lot of fans’ ears.

Seamus Coleman may not extend his contract, and even if he did he would not be a regular starter for Everton.

Which of these players do you want to see Everton SIGN in 2026?

The following names have been suggested by fans on TalkingPoints…

Nathan Patterson is out of favour and will likely be sold.

And Jake O’Brien has had some very good games there. But his natural position is in the middle, and Moyes ought to start getting him and Jarrad Branthwaite more games as a pairing.

A few players have been linked so far, such as Ben White, Rico Lewis, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Oscar Mingueza.

But Mats Wieffer has quietly had a great season with Brighton and ought to be considered.

Wieffer signed for Brighton in the summer of 2024 from Feyenoord.

At just over £25 million he didn’t come cheap, but the Dutchman has really looked the part this term as the Seagulls rival Everton for European football.

Wieffer actually came to Brighton as a midfielder.

But this term he converted to right back – and Squawka data has ranked him as the fourth best in that position in the Premier League so far this term.

He’s only behind Jurrien Timber, Daniel Munoz and Kenny Tete. He is ranked higher than some big names though, such as Reece James and Diogo Dalot.

The data site says of him: “The Dutchman has put his ball-playing skills to good use, ranking well for xA per 90. What’s more, he’s got the job more than done defensively, occupying a place in the 95th percentile of right-backs for tackles won. He also ranks well for clearances and interceptions per 90′.

Some of his more impressive metrics include 6.8 duels won per 90, and 3.2 tackles per 90.

In terms of attacking output, he’s got five Premier League goal contributions this season, made up of two goals and three assists. Those two goals came in the same game, just last weekend against Burnley.

So he’s been fairly solid all round.

And then you look at his physical profile. Wieffer is 6ft 2in tall and as we all know, David Moyes does like taller players who have good physicality.

At the age of 26 and with 52 Premier League appearances under his belt, he is surely worthy of Moyes’ consideration, as he seeks to finally sign a right-back this summer.

Fabian Hurzeler loves Mats Wieffer

One man who certainly rates Wieffer’s quality is his manager, Fabian Hurzeler.

Speaking after his brace against Burnley, he said of him (via The Argus): “He has the quality and also the physicality that he can attack a lot, that he can run in a high speed distance.

“He wants to create this dynamic from behind, the same as for Ferdi and that is what we demand from our full-backs.

(via Goal): “He’s developed excellently as a full-back because he has that freedom, and defensively he’s very physically strong.

“For me, he is currently one of the best Dutch players in the world, so I hope he gets a chance to go to the World Cup. He absolutely deserves it.”

High praise indeed.

Given he has a contract until 2029 and his recent rise, he likely wouldn’t come cheap. But Everton need a strong option, and Wieffer certainly seems like one.
