‘Ungrateful little wretch’ - Simon Jordan slams Newcastle United star for Eddie Howe treatment

The pressure has ramped up on Eddie Howe as Newcastle United sit 14th in the Premier League.

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has accepted that a fresh voice could rejuvenate Newcastle United.

However, he also highlighted how any Eddie Howe replacement would face the same PSR issues that have frustrated the Magpies in recent years. The Toon boss is under pressure following the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Similarly to Sunderland three weeks earlier, Newcastle capitulated after taking a 1-0 lead at half-time. Boos could be heard from the Selhurst Park away end as Howe and his players applauded the travelling supporters.

As it stands, the St James’ Park hierarchy remain firmly behind Howe. But there is a general consensus - created since David Hopkinson’s discussion with the media - that the next six games are crucial for his future.

Simon Jordan on Newcastle United decision

Ex-Palace chief Jordan noted how a new face could reinvigorate a stale dressing room. Speaking to talkSPORT, he also hit out at Sandro Tonali - understood to be considering a Newcastle exit this summer.

“Sure, they can get a more established manager in people's minds,” Jordan said. “I wouldn't feel excited by Roberto Mancini if I were Newcastle. Jose Mourinho, I think has had his day.

“A different voice can change things. Eddie has been there for four years. Danny (Murphy) will tell you what dressing rooms are like. They don't respond forever, irrespective of whether players turn over. There is a necessity to change things. I'm not entirely sure why they'd be compromised by PSR.

“They've just sold a £125million footballer. So whilst they've bought players, those have been capitalised over four years, and the value of Isak has been brought into this year. So I would imagine Newcastle may have some bandwidth to be able to spend money.”

“But the problem they've got, and the problem they will continue to have, is they can't bridge the £300million gap to those that they want to be. And they can't keep their players. If they can't keep their players, and as much as Tonali is an ungrateful little wretch that should be staying longer because he caused them problems when he got banned with the betting staff, he will go.

“Other players will go. Anthony Gordon will probably go and, all of a sudden, before you get yourself an opportunity to build, you're rebuilding.”

‘I’m 100% committed’ - Eddie Howe

Last week, Howe reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle. He told reporters: “For me, nothing's changed. I'm absolutely 100 per cent committed to the job. That commitment has never wavered from my side. I've been working during the break to make sure that we come back a stronger team.

“I think in this day and age, I think it's very difficult to look too far in the long term. I can only look at these seven games and make sure that we perform at our very best level, and make sure the players are ready for these games, and we go right to the end of the season.”
