Tzimas opens up about ACL injury and Welbeck's role in his recovery

The young Greek striker expects to return to the pitch next week after surgery on a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

His season was ended on his first Premier League start when he went down at home to Aston Villa.

While a return to match action is not imminent, he is upbeat about his rehab and looking forward to getting back on the grass at Lancing.

Tzimas suffered his setback three days after scoring his first Prem goal, late in the win at Nottingham Forest.

He told The Argus: “It was like a dream, to play Premier League and score.

“After three days, I had my first starting line-up against Aston Villa and I had an injury.

“It was difficult, to be honest. Difficult moments for me in my first game.

“But I had the full support of my team-mates from many players and especially Danny Welbeck very close to me.

“The whole Brighton players and staff gave me full support.

“The rehab goes very well, as planned, and I am ready to come back soon.

“My recovery goes very well. In a week I will start on the pitch, to go out on the pitch and then slowly, slowly, step by step.”

Welbeck has had his own injury setbacks and has been a key support for his team-mate, who was also making good progress with Greece under-21s.

Tzimas said: “The next day (after the Villa game), I went to the training ground.

“It was a day off for the team, so I went to meet the doctor, to tell me the results, and only Danny was there, for recovery.

“When I heard the news, I was very sad, but Danny was there and we had a long conversation.

“He was speaking to me and he helped me like every day.

“He helps me a lot and I'm very grateful for this.”

Tzimas looked to be enjoying himself on his trip to Hangleton Primary School in support of the Albion Foundation charity.

He helped lead a Premier League Primary Stars PE session as part of the programme which uses the positive power of professional football clubs to inspire children to be active, look after their wellbeing and develop important life skills.
