There are some big decisions for Newcastle United to make this summer.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and England full-back was reunited with Eddie Howe when he agreed to become a Magpies during the 2022 January transfer window after working under the current United manager during his time with Burnley. Trippier’s arrival heralded the start of the PIF-owned era at St James Park and he is widely accepted as the catalyst for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sven Botman to join the club over the months that followed.
Trippier’s impact on and off the pitch was clear to see as he helped Newcastle avoid relegation during his first five months as a Magpies despite seeing the second half of his 2021/22 season somewhat decimated by a foot injury. His first full season in black and white brought qualification for the Champions League and a first major cup final since May 1999 - although thoughts of claiming silverware were temporarily put on hold by a Carabao Cup final defeat against Manchester United.
The last 18 months have been challenging for Trippier as he has found himself in and out of Howe’s side - but he was part of the side that did finally end the Magpies painfully long wait for silverware with a Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool last season. The confirmation his time as a Magpie will officially end this summer brought a number of heartfelt tributes from fans, coaches and team-mates alike and the former Atletico Madrid star will always be fondly remembered by those on Tyneside.
However, Trippier may not be the only Magpies star set to leave at the end of the season as news is awaited on the future of Fabian Schar. The long-serving centre back is hoping to make a comeback from injury before the end of the season after suffering an ankle injury in the dramatic 4-3 win against Leeds United in January - but there have been no announcements over whether the Swiss defender’s current contract will be extended before the end of the campaign. There are also decisions to made over several players that will enter the final year of their existing contracts this summer and there are some firm Eddie Howe favourites on that list.
When does the contracts of current Newcastle United players come to an end?
