Opinion: Wolves will be wincing over £5m Goncalo Guedes sale after what he's done at Real…

Goncalo Guedes is quietly producing one of his most effective seasons in years, in further embarrassment for Wolves.

The Portuguese forward is now delivering consistent output again, which suggests his struggles in England were more down to being a poor fit than a reflection of his ability.

Goncalo Guedes departed Wolves last summer to join Real Sociedad, having often drawn criticism from Wolves fans across his three-year spell at Molineux.

A lot of his time was spent out on loan, as Wolves sought to keep his value high.

But eventually, Guedes was sold for just £5 million – and that fee now looks embarrassing.

Goncalo Guedes is proving his level again away from Wolves

Guedes is delivering the kind of numbers that underline his attacking quality this season.

With the season drawing to a close, he has managed nine goals and seven assists in 37 appearances for Sociedad, a return that reflects real consistency – something he struggled to manage at Wolves.

That output aligns with the level he showed before arriving at Wolves and reinforces the idea that his ability has never been in question.

His struggles at Molineux now look increasingly isolated when set against what he is producing elsewhere.

But Wolves’ sale of the player for £5 million really does look pretty awful now – and even Wolves fans blasted it at the time.

While it was widely accepted that Guedes was a player who could move on and wanted to, that shouldn’t have meant he’d be sold for pittance.

Ultimately, he still made 10 goal contributions last season despite his lack of starting opportunities.

It just further emphasises what a poor window it was for Wolves, who also arguably sold Rayan Ait-Nouri for less than his true value.

Guedes admitted he couldn’t adapt at Wolves

Shortly after he left, Guedes provided an explanation as to why things failed to click for him in England.

Essentially he put it down to not feeling comfortable, saying: “I never fully adapted in England, and now I’m hoping to return to my best level as quickly as possible.

“I’ve already spoken with the coach, I understand what he expects from me, and I’m ready to give my all – both on and off the pitch.”

Guedes’ resurgence is really frustrating from a Wolves perspective.

He really did always have ability, but he just wasn’t the right fit for the club, and that’s on the recruitment team. And his final sale price is also on them.
