Joel Kerr’s former employers in Northern Ireland were not lying when they said West Ham United had snapped up a ‘natural footballer with real quality’ during the summer of 2025, following his arrival from Glentoran.
To quote Andy Mathieson, Head of Player Development at Glentoran, Kerr was handed a ‘fantastic opportunity’ when the Hammers came calling.
An opportunity he grasped with both hands, and continues to hold in a vice-like grip; the teenager approaching the one-year anniversary of his journey across the sea.
Out of favour at Stoke, no future at Man City…

And what a way to mark it. The fleet-footed teenager broke into double figures as a West Ham United player on Wednesday night.
An 88th minute winner as Luke Smith’s U17s beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 in Accrington. Thus, securing the Under-17 Premier League Cup title in the most dramatic fashion.
Joel Kerr fires West Ham United to U17 Premier League Cup glory
Not content with starting the move which saw Chuk Obi equalise on the night – Blackburn had bounced back after 15-year-old Jude Longman fired West Ham into the lead – Kerr would go from helper to hero as he rose highest at the back-stick to thunder home a header in the dying embers of normal time.
Talk about exorcising the ghosts of the past.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES
Joel Kerr scored a ‘magical’ goal against Manchester United in the semi-finals of the Under-18 tournament a month ago. That day, he went toe-to-toe with JJ Gabriel, the most prodigious academy talent in the country, and very nearly came out on top.
There was to be no denying the Northern Ireland sensation this time around, though. West Ham have therefore become the first youth-side to claim the Premier League Cup title at U21, U18 and U17 level.
Kerr has been in superb form for club and country in recent months, racking up 14 goals in the process. It was inevitable that, if West Ham were to edge out Blackburn in Lancashire, he would have a very big say in proceedings.
