Duncan Ferguson has already told Everton how they can beat Liverpool

Everton hero Duncan Ferguson has already set out a route to victory in the Merseyside Derby.

Sunday will mark the first Merseyside Derby held at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, which has certainly endured a turbulent first season.

Everton enjoyed their first big result last time out at the new stadium against Chelsea, but a win against Liverpool would be huge for the Toffees.

With the Reds coming into the game out of form, Ferguson’s comments from the final derby at Goodison Park still ring true to this day.

Duncan Ferguson knows how Everton can beat Liverpool

Although Everton have been much-improved this season under David Moyes, they have recorded the fourth-lowest average possession (43.7%) of any side in the league.

Speaking to The Telegraph last year, Ferguson admitted Everton would not be able to beat Liverpool in a possession battle, which remains the case.

“They can do it if they set the tempo, put them under pressure, get on top of them, get the fans involved and defend for their lives,” said Big Dunc.

“An in swinging corner on top of the keeper and a headed goal would do, wouldn’t it?”

Jarrad Branthwaite scored from a corner not too long ago against Newcastle United as the Blues earned a hard-fought three points on Tyneside.

“There is nothing wrong with winning a game like that. Everton can’t win the derby passing Liverpool off the park, can they!”

Everton can certainly pose more of an attacking threat than they did last season, with players like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall proving a real threat.

Dewsbury-Hall is ready to make a statement in the Merseyside Derby, with more than just three points on the line for Everton.

However, Ferguson’s comments on setting the tone both on the pitch and in the stands remain true.

Everton fans will be expected to create a memorable atmosphere at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the players also expected to set the press on the pitch.

Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike, but their poor form alone should provide Everton with a lot of confidence going into the game.
