Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele has delivered his verdict on the rest of the season.
Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele has vowed that he and his teammates “will fight until the end of the season” as they look to wrap up an improbable qualification for European football over the coming weeks.
The Frenchman was the match-winning hero of the Black Cats’ 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, with his heavily deflected shot ultimately handing all three points to Regis Le Bris’ side at the Stadium of Light.
As a consequence, Sunderland are now just two points adrift of sixth-placed Chelsea, and speaking to the club’s official website, Mukiele has hailed his team for the manner in which they have played their way into such a promising position.
He said: “We started the season really well and that’s why we are here today. Everyone knows that the league is really long. We started well and then had some difficult moments which is totally normal. We got injuries, players going to AFCON and that is not easy to manage. I think we did that so well though because when we look at the table and see where we are, that means we did well.”

On their prospects for the remainder of the campaign, he added: “We know we have six games left and we know we have to try and reach something different because we know our target at the beginning of the season is done now. With this team and this quality that we have, we can reach something else. We will fight for this until the end of the season.”
