Luke Edwards moves to clarify Anthony Gordon story after fan backlash

This morning, The Telegraph reported that Anthony Gordon was seeking a move away from Newcastle United.

Journalist Luke Edwards wrote a piece saying that there's a feeling inside Newcastle that Gordon would be open to a move away from St James' Park in the summer.

The fact that Edwards added that the club would want the situation sorted before the World Cup added a sense of urgency to the story and also gave some fans cause to worry.

While the report does state that Gordon isn't agitating for a move, it's just a feeling that he'd be open to leaving; that's not what some people have read, and fans have turned on the winger.

The problem these days is that attention spans are so short, so many people only read the headlines and react to them without reading any of the details in the story before going off on social media.

Luke Edwards forced to add context to Anthony Gordon report

That obviously happened this morning as Luke Edwards has had to post a follow-up on X, giving a bit of context to his story.

Certain fans have turned on Gordon instantly, questioning his attitude, and if we're being honest, we did it too. While we made sure to point out the fact that Gordon hasn't made any suggestions he wants to leave, we have questioned his commitment to the club, which wasn't helped by a lazy and lacklustre display at Palace last weekend.

In our defence, though, that's nothing new. We've been questioning him all season. For a long time, he only seemed to turn up for big games, particularly the Champions League.

Have we as fans pushed Gordon towards the exit?

We suspect that was never his intention, but it's undeniable that's how it came across for a big portion of this campaign. But he wasn't the only misfiring player, so how much can you really pin on one man?

The grief directed his way during that spell won't have helped, and could well be playing on his mind as he sees potential options opening up ahead of the summer.

As Edwards says in his post on X, there's no point denying he'd be interested in a move away. He has lofty ambitions, and he's come in for a fair bit of stick from fans this season. We've made our bed on this one.
