Sunderland chief David Bruce considered for Sheffield Wednesday CEO role amid takeover talks

Soon-to-depart Sunderland executive linked with Hillsborough move as new ownership plans take shape

The Wednesday Word, by Joe Crann, has reported that Bruce is among the names under consideration for the Chief Executive Officer position at Hillsborough, should a proposed takeover led by David Storch and the Arise consortium be completed.

The report states that Bruce is “one of the names being considered” for the role, with the potential appointment viewed as a significant coup as the club prepares for a possible new era. While there is still work to be done before any takeover is finalised, it is said that planning behind the scenes is already underway, with senior appointments part of that process.

Bruce is to leave Sunderland this summer following a period of significant change behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light. Initially appointed as Chief Brand and Commercial Officer in July 2023, he was promoted to Chief Business Officer a year later and played a key role in a number of commercial developments. These included the club’s switch to Hummel as kit supplier and the outsourcing of retail operations to Fanatics, as well as overseeing marketing campaigns such as ‘Til The End’.

However, The Echo understands Sunderland are moving in a different direction as they look to further grow commercial revenues following their return to the Premier League. A new Chief Executive Officer is expected to be appointed in the coming months, with Tom Burwell stepping in on an interim basis. The club are also in the process of recruiting a Chief Revenue Officer as part of a broader restructure.

Bruce’s departure comes amid a wider period of change within Sunderland’s off-field leadership, with Mike Papadimitriou joining as Chief Financial Officer last year and further links strengthening with the Bia Sports Group, the organisation through which Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Juan Sartori oversee their sporting investments.

Speaking following confirmation of Bruce’s exit, chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus paid tribute to his contribution. “David has made an important contribution to Sunderland AFC, and I want to thank him for the commitment he has shown throughout his time with us," he said.

"His connection to Sunderland is profound, and that has been reflected in the care, dedication, and energy he has brought to the role. He should be immensely proud of the part he has played in helping move the club forward. As our leadership structure evolves to reflect our continued growth in the Premier League, we will now appoint a permanent Chief Executive Officer to help consolidate and build on the progress we have made."

Bruce, meanwhile, described his time at the club as a “privilege”. "To have had the chance to play a part in the story of my boyhood club has been a privilege I will carry with me forever," he said. "Every decision, every late night and every challenge was driven by one thing — a desire to see Sunderland AFC become everything this club, its supporters and this city deserve. I leave proud of what we have built, grateful for the people I have worked alongside, and certain that the club can reach even greater heights."
