Liverpool now have significant plan in place for “crucial” Reds player this summer - report

Jeremie Frimpong has had a hit-and-miss first season in a Liverpool shirt, and now a key update has emerged regarding his future.

The Dutchman sealed a move to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, joining alongside Florian Wirtz after winning the Bundesliga title together in 2023/24.

Frimpong hasn’t yet properly got going for Liverpool, however, with injuries stunting his progress, having frustratingly rarely missed games for Leverkusen.

When he has been fit, the 25-year-old has flattered to deceive, possessing great pace but not providing strong enough end product.

While used predominantly as a right-back by Arne Slot, having been a wing-back under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, there now looks to be a change of plan for him.

That’s according to Anfield Watch, who report that Liverpool are “planning a new role” for the Netherlands international, using him as a winger moving forward instead.

The Reds are “looking into buying a right-back this summer in order to once and for all replace Trent Alexander-Arnold”, with Frimpong seemingly not doing the job well enough.

Does a change in role for Jeremie Frimpong make sense?

This is an interesting update, with opinion likely to be split over what Frimpong’s most effective position is.

There is definitely some sense of making him a winger, though, with his defensive work not necessarily the most convincing at right-back, or his physicality there.

Giving Frimpong more attacking freedom could make the most sense, with Slot lauding his special qualities earlier this season, saying:

“Pace, that’s what he has, and that’s so important and crucial in modern football. To create something against a low block, teams that defend with so many players, usually teams break this down with set-pieces – that’s not our biggest strength. So to have him available with his pace, because the first goal we scored was pure individual ability: quick, bam-bam, and the cutback cross.”

Wherever Frimpong plays, more is needed from him moving forward, though, and it may be that he struggles to make it into Liverpool’s strong XI next season.

A superior right-back is needed, while on the right wing, an elite successor to Mohamed Salah is a must, rather than simply replacing him with Frimpong.
