Andoni Iraola approach made - Fresh twist in Newcastle United managerial saga

Andoni Iraola has been tipped as a potential Eddie Howe successor at Newcastle United.

Crystal Palace have reportedly made an approach for wantaway Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

The past 48 hours has seen the Spaniard linked with Newcastle United after announcing plans to leave the south coast. Bournemouth were unable to tie down Iraola - who arrived in 2023 - beyond the current campaign.

He is tipped to return to the Basque region of Spain and manage Athletic Bilbao. However, there are suggestions Iraola is hoping for a step up at Premier League level.

Bookmakers place Iraola as the favourite to take over from Eddie Howe should Newcastle part ways this summer. Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with the 43-year-old tactician.

Crystal Palace make Andoni Iraola approach

Spanish outlet Marca claim Palace have already made an offer for Iraola, with Oliver Glasner leaving the club at the end of the season. An ambitious bid, considering the potential suitors rumoured to be interested.

While many would view this as a sideways step, location is key. The thought of joining the Eagles - just 90 minutes from Bournemouth - on better terms prevents uprooting his family.

As for Newcastle, new CEO David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson remain behind Howe - for now. There is an acceptance that no decision will be made on Howe’s future until the end of the campaign.

The Magpies sit 14th in the Premier League with just six games remaining. Hopkinson and WIlson sympathise with the mitigating factors behind the poor season but dissenting voices from the fan base have ramped up in recent weeks.

Andoni Iraola on leaving Bournemouth

Iraola called managing Bournemouth an “honour” in a farewell statement earlier this week. He said: "It has been an honour to manage AFC Bournemouth and I am proud of what we have achieved together. I’m thankful to the players and staff that I’ve worked with, as well as Bill (Foley), who have all made my time here so special."

Thanking Iraola, Cherries chairman Foley added: “Andoni has been instrumental in shaping the direction of this football club over the past three seasons.

“He brought intensity, innovation, and a clear philosophy that elevated AFC Bournemouth both on and off the pitch. We are incredibly thankful for his leadership and will always have great memories of our time working together, as well as the things we accomplished.”
