Harry Maguire snubbed £30m West Ham transfer - now Nuno has his own version

Konstantinos Mavropanos’ redemption arc is one of the tales of West Ham United’s season, but this is far from a unique story.

Konstantinos Mavropanos is, in a sense, the Ulysses to Harry Maguire’s Odyssey.

A much-maligned centre-half written off by huge swathes of the fanbase, only to come back stronger than ever. Some big goals, some even bigger performances, all the while ousting more fashionable, naturally-talented alternatives and serving up a slice of humble pie so glutinous it would have Man v Food’s Adam Richman waving the white flag.

Mavropanos will be rewarded with a new contract at West Ham United, ExWHUEmployee reports in the build-up to Monday’s London derby away at Crystal Palace. Maguire inked a one-year extension at Old Trafford earlier this month.

Not so long ago, you wouldn’t have struggled to find disgruntled supporters willing to taxi Mavropanos or Maguire to the airport. Good riddance, don’t let the door hit you on the way out, and all that.

Now, though, if any clubs want to sign two of English football’s comeback kids, well, you’ll have to get through us first.

The ironic thing, of course, is that West Ham agreed a £30 million fee with Manchester United to sign Maguire back in 2023, via The Athletic.

Maguire instead opted to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place. A previously mistrustful Man United fanbase will be very glad he did. From Lyon to Liverpool, Copenhagen to Coventry, Maguire has scored so many big goals in big moments since then, all the while proving that the ‘error-prone’ tag can be shaken off with enough solid performances.

Mavropanos is going through a strikingly similar transformation in the capital.

Free-scoring Mavropanos is the ‘warrior’ of West Ham

Not only did Mavropanos end West Ham’s 86-game wait for a goal from a centre-back in last month’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, the former Arsenal man hit an unexpected brace in Friday’s 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

Mavropanos has been just as commanding in his own penalty area. The Greek international is in ‘exceptional’ form. Nuno Espirito Santo calls him West Ham’s ‘warrior’. And while Axel Disasi has claimed much of the credit, a timely run of four clean sheets in nine Premier League matches owes just as much to the Chelsea loanee’s colossal centre-back partner.

Have you ever seen a turnaroud as dramatic as Dinos? ⚽ ⚽ 🇬🇷

West Ham United's Konstantinos Mavropanos celebrates scoring his side's first goal during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at London Stadium on April 10, 2026 in London, United Kingdom.

“I think Dinos has been really, really helpful for us,” Nuno said after Mavropanos took an Erling Haaland blockbuster to the face from point blank range but carried on.

“Since I joined, I don’t recall one day where Dinos wasn’t there. He is a warrior. Of course, [people] notice the highlights – scoring a goal – but he’s doing an amazing job.”

Between them, Maguire and Mavropanos committed five errors which led directly to opposition goals in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Neither has committed even a single one so far this term.

Three years ago, West Ham responded to Maguire’s decision to stay at Man United by investing £17 million in bringing Mavropanos back to England from Stuttgart. Even to this day, their paths remain connected.
