Man Utd remove seven names from next manager shortlist as Andoni Iraola update emerges - Ben…

Manchester United will soon begin the process of appointing a permanent new manager, with Michael Carrick remaining the front-runner as it stands.

Carrick was brought in in January to replace the sacked Ruben Amorim on an interim basis until the end of the season, but will be hoping to take the job on a full-time basis heading into the 2026/27 season.

The former United midfielder has steadied the ship since taking over from Amorim and has guided the Red Devils to third place in the Premier League table, albeit having suffered defeat at home to Leeds in their last match.

Andoni Iraola News Could Change Manchester United Thinking

The Englishman remains the favourite to take the reins permanently, but the odds with the bookmakers have shifted slightly behind him, with Julian Nagelsmann - current Germany boss - and Andoni Iraola shortening in the market.

It has been confirmed that Iraola will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season and he is reportedly looking for a bigger job, with not many coming bigger than the role at Old Trafford.

A number of names have been linked with the United post, but quite a few have been ruled out of the running, GIVEMESPORT understands.

GMS senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs appeared on the United Stand YouTube channel on Thursday afternoon to offer an update on the hunt for a permanent boss. And he ruled out five managers from taking over in the United dugout.

Current And Former England Bosses Linked With Manchester United

He said: "Names we can rule out based on sourcing and people that I've spoken to are Luis Enrique at the moment, because he will sign a three-year contract, as I've reported quite consistently [at PSG], Gareth Southgate, even with Steve Holland at the football club, has not had any approach and has not even decided if he wants another job in club football.

"Jurgen Klopp, it won't surprise you that he's not part of the process. Xabi Alonso and Enzo Maresca are also not under consideration as it stands. Maresca actually was before Ruben Amorim came into the job, but the expectation is that he's holding out for Manchester City.

"Kieran McKenna formed part of their thinking before Ruben Amorim came in, but the challenge there is that if you go down that route of someone with Manchester United DNA, it's likely Michael Carrick presents himself as a stronger candidate in terms of both transition and also understanding of the club.

"And Thomas Tuchel, who almost certainly, according to my information, would have been one of the leading candidates, if not the leading candidate, but he signed a new deal with England.

"And then you're left with Julian Nagelsman and Michael Carrick and, as it stands at the moment, not a great deal else. As I say, we wait and see whether Iraola is added to the process, or alternatively, Manchester United stick to their initial shortlisting."
