Liverpool are already making calls for a new signing who could spell the end of Alexis Mac Allister - opinion

Alexis Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s most concerning performers this season, with the Argentine dropping off inexplicably from his previous levels.

After being nominated for the Ballon d’Or as well as the PFA Player of the Year last season, Mac Allister had looked primed to continue as one of the Reds’ most important players.

However, having struggled with an injury in pre-season, the 27-year-old just has not looked like the same since. And after a claim from the Daily Mail about Liverpool‘s transfer plans, it seems probable that Mac Allister is due to be replaced.

Liverpool ‘put feelers out’ for a new midfielder

While adding to their attack looks set to be the main focus for Liverpool this summer, they absolutely must not overlook the midfield, which has become weak and flimsy this season.

Thankfully, the Mail suggest that the Reds will make an addition in the middle of the pitch, claiming that ‘Liverpool have been putting feelers out in the market’ to sign a midfielder this summer.

Noting that more ‘energy and athleticism’ is needed, it seems that Mac Allister could be edged out.

As The Athletic note, Ryan Gravenberch is not going anywhere having recently signed a new contract, while Dominik Szoboszlai is also in talks over an extension.

Though Mac Allister may yet extend his stay at Anfield as well, he currently looks by far the player most at risk from a new signing coming in.

12 months ago that would have felt unthinkable, but if Liverpool enter next season with the exact same midfield, there will be little confidence amongst the fanbase of an improvement in fortunes.

Who could the new midfield target be?

When Liverpool were attempting to upgrade their midfield in 2023, Jude Bellingham was the player fans were desperate to see arrive.

Fast forward three years, and there is not an obvious new arrival who could make the same game-changing impact.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are both favourites among the fanbase, and though Anderson in particular would add the requisite ‘energy and athleticism,’ he would cost a similar fee to the one Liverpool baulked at paying for Bellingham.

Eduardo Camavinga is set to be available, and could be a shrewd pick-up by the Reds. Coming off a low ebb at Real Madrid, the Frenchman would undoubtedly still improve Liverpool.

Then there are less eye-catching names such as Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller or Mohamed Camara at Monaco who would maybe provide a hark back to Liverpool’s previously successful transfer models.

Whatever happens, it is starting to look as though Mac Allister’s career at Anfield is on very thin ice.
